Italy will continue to support Moldova on its path to European integration, in the field of social protection and in projects that benefit citizens. Ambassador of Italy Moldova Giuseppe Maria Perricone has made statements to this effect at a meeting with Prime Minister Alexandru Munteanu.
The PM mentioned that "Italy stays a good friend and an important strategic partner of Moldova, and our ties are quite close, including because of our large Diaspora in Italy, which contributes to the economy of both countries. Our people are respected and have integrated well."
In the past four years, the political dialogue between Moldova and Italy has become very active—at the level of presidents, prime ministers and local authorities. Thanks to the Social Security Agreement, as of September 1, 2025, Moldovans who have worked in Italy can receive pensions for the years worked, regardless of whether they stay there or return home. Only Albania and Moldova have such an agreement with Italy. Also, starting from November 8, 2025, the Agreement on the conversion of Moldovan driving licenses in Italy has come into force.
At the same time, in the past four years, Moldova has benefited from external assistance on behalf of Italy, amounting to over 90 million euros, resources allocated to support families in paying energy invoices.
The prime minister expressed interest in boosting economic relations and attracting Italian investors to Moldova, welcoming the opening of the office of the Italian Agency for Development and Cooperation in Chisinau. Italy is among the top four economic partners of Moldova, with around 1,200 Italian companies operating in the country.
During the meeting, the officials also discussed the need to continue bilateral cooperation in such important as defense, agriculture’s modernization and energy security.
