Chisinau denounces seven agreements concluded with CIS member states
Cabinet of Ministers denounced on 12 November seven agreements concluded with member states of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS). The Ministry of Foreign Affairs will notify the CIS Executive Committee about the denunciation of the agreements. The decision will come into effect upon publication in the Official Journal of the Republic of Moldova.
Deputy Prime Minister Mihai Popșoi mentioned that the agreements are no longer relevant because the Republic of Moldova has not participated in them since the '90s, and many have been denounced by the founding members of the CIS.
The most notable denounced agreement is the one regarding visa-free travel for CIS citizens within its member territories. According to Mihai Popșoi, the Russian Federation denounced this agreement in 2000. Kazakhstan did so in 2001, Turkmenistan in 1999, and Uzbekistan in 2001.
Popșoi stated that the denunciation of the document will not affect Moldovan citizens' travels to CIS countries as the Republic of Moldova has bilateral agreements with CIS countries, except for two: Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan.
"Largely, today's decision does not change anything for our citizens; we are just tidying up since these agreements, as I mentioned, effectively bring no benefit to the citizens of the Republic of Moldova because either they haven't functioned or have been denounced by many of the founding members a very long time ago," Popșoi said.
