Council of Europe Office to UN inaugurated in New York

Cooperation between the Republic of Moldova and the Council of Europe, including support for the country’s democratic reforms and European path was reaffirmed in New York, where the Council of Europe Office of the Permanent Observer to the United Nations was inaugurated. Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Foreign Affairs Mihai Popșoi attended the event at the invitation of Council of Europe Secretary General Alain Berset.

The new structure aims to strengthen the Council of Europe’s presence within the UN framework and develop dialogue with states that are not members of the organization, as well as with other international organizations.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the opening of the office will support joint efforts to strengthen multilateralism and promote the Council of Europe’s values globally.

Mihai Popșoi’s participation in the event also provided an opportunity to reaffirm cooperation between the Republic of Moldova and the Council of Europe in the area of democratic reforms. In this context, the Action Plan for the Republic of Moldova 2025–2028 was highlighted, along with the role of the Council of Europe’s expertise in supporting the country’s European path.

Popșoi welcomed the opening of the Permanent Observer Office in New York and expressed his confidence that the new structure would contribute to strengthening cooperation between the Council of Europe and the UN, for the benefit of member states.

Popșoi is paying a working visit to New York, United States of America, this week. The official is part of the national delegation led by Prime Minister Vasile Tofan, which is participating in the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly and related events.
