Moldova to send Russia protest note over unauthorized opening of polling stations for elections; Moldovan foreign affairs minister says it represents unfriendly act
The authorities of Moldova are preparing a protest note to the Mission of the Russian Federation in Chisinau, after the announcement of plans to open more polling stations in the country than the ones authorized for the elections in the Russian Federation. Deputy Prime Minister, Foreign Affairs Minister Mihai Popsoi today made statements to this effect, who stressed that any polling station opened without authorization “represents an unfriendly act.”
According to the official, the authorities authorized only the opening of the polling station located at the Embassy of the Russian Federation in Chisinau.
“We are in the process of sending a protest note to the Mission of the Russian Federation in Chisinau, in the context of learning about plans to open, on the territory of Moldova, more polling stations than those authorized for the elections in the Russian Federation. Thus, only the polling station located at the Embassy of the Russian Federation in Chisinau was authorized. Any other polling station opened without the consent of the Moldova’s constitutional authorities represents an unfriendly act. We will make this known, including through the protest note that we are to send to the Russian Federation,” Mihai Popsoi said.
The Tiraspol separatist leader, Vadim Krasnoselski has earlier said that 17 polling stations were to be opened in the Transnistrian region for the elections to Russia’s State Duma.
The legislative elections are scheduled to take place in Russia on September 18- 20, 2026.
