Moldovan parliament speaker conveys message on 35th anniversary of first parliament's establishment
Most MPs of the first Parliament of Moldova, supported by the will and determination of hundreds of thousands of citizens, paved the way for the country's independence and freedom. Parliament Speaker Igor Grosu today conveyed a message on the matter, on the occasion of the 35th anniversary of the legal establishment of the first Parliament.
"They are the founding fathers of our state and to whom we owe our freedom, sovereignty and independence. The first Parliament was and still is a reference point for us as a nation, for our ideals," Igor Grosu said.
The speaker thanked the lawmakers of the first Parliament, who made history and laid the foundations of the Moldova’s independence. The official highlighted that the current legislative body included two deputies from the first Parliament - Mihail Druta and Vasile Soimaru.
"It is an honor to have them as colleagues, especially in these times, when Moldova is once again going through a defining period for its future. The European integration, first mentioned in the Declaration of Independence, is closer than ever. Moldova is a candidate state for accession to the European Union. What we are building in Moldova today is a duty not only for future generations, but also towards past generations, who sacrificed and defended the future of their country. Today, we are in the future for which hundreds of thousands of citizens fought. This future must be European – prosperous, free, democratic," Igor Grosu stressed.
The first meeting of the democratically elected Parliament of the Moldova took place on 17 April 1990.
