Turkish MPs invited to participate as observers in elections in Gagauzia

Turkish lawmakers are invited to participate as observers in the elections in the Gagauz Autonomous Territorial Unit, scheduled to take place on November 15. The invitation was extended by Parliament Speaker Igor Grosu at a meeting with his Turkish counterpart, Numan Kurtulmuş, President of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey, held in Rome.

The discussions took place on the sidelines of the European Conference of Presidents of Parliament of the Council of Europe member states, being held in the Italian capital.

“We discussed the situation in the Gagauz autonomy and the upcoming elections in the region. In the context, I invited Turkish MPs to participate as observers in this very important election for the autonomy. For us, it is important that the region develops in peace and stability as an integral part of Moldova, while preserving and promoting its Gagauz identity, language and culture,” the parliament speaker said.

During the meeting, the speaker appreciated the support provided by Turkey to  Moldova. At the same time, the two officials agreed to strengthen communication and cooperation between the parliaments of the two countries.

The elections for the position of Bashkan of Gagauzia and for the People’s Assembly of the autonomy are scheduled for November 15, 2026. Eight candidates have registered for the position of Bashkan, while 135 candidates have been registered for the 35 seats in the regional legislature.

According to the Central Electoral Commission, applications for the accreditation of national and international observers for the elections to the People’s Assembly of Gagauzia and for the position of Governor (Bashkan) of Gagauzia on November 15, 2026, may be submitted until November 8, 2026, inclusively.

Igor Grosu is participating in the proceedings of the European Conference of Presidents of Parliament of the Council of Europe member states. The parliament speaker spoke during the panel dedicated to hybrid threats against resilient democracies, presenting Moldova’s experience in combating foreign interference and protecting democratic processes.
