Attempts to corrupt Moldovan citizens' votes in Romania, France, Germany, Italy, United Kingdom

Police have reported several attempts to corrupt the electoral process involving Moldovan citizens in Romania, France, Germany, Italy and the United Kingdom. Currently, law enforcement bodies are documenting all cases and persons involved in such actions. Head of the General Police Inspectorate (IGP) Viorel Cernăuțeanu made the statement today.

The IGP leadership emphasized that the stakes of these actions are very high, as they seek massive corruption.

'We have a very well-prepared diaspora and we hope that people will not fall prey to these illegal processes orchestrated by the Russian Federation through intermediaries. Regarding these cases, we have an exchange of information with colleagues abroad; I am referring to my partners and counterparts in the countries where these intentions persist. We have informed partner authorities about these matters, we communicate inter-institutionally and in the Republic of Moldova to establish how we proceed further,' said Cernăuțeanu.

He said that such illegal actions have been detected in countries with large diaspora, namely: Romania, France, Germany, Italy and the United Kingdom.

'The phenomenon is specific to countries where we have a massive diaspora and in which these illegal actions could be executed without attracting heightened attention from the law enforcement agencies. I am referring to countries such as Romania, France, Germany, Italy, and the United Kingdom. In the diaspora, the cost of a vote is much higher than here in the country. Payment far exceeds the amount of 1,000 lei. Therefore, we are trying to prevent these forms of corruption to the maximum. We have identified certain groups of people and several groups are already being documented, and we are confident that we will soon manage to prevent such attempts,' noted Cernăuțeanu.

In this context, the leadership of the National Police urged diaspora citizens to report any potential attempts of electoral corruption to the hotline of the National Anticorruption Center, through the communication pages of the IGP, or via the institutional state platforms.
