
Famous Moldovan academician marks 75th birthday anniversary
Chisinau, 16 February /MOLDPRES/ - Academician, surgeon oncologist, PhD in medical sciences, university professor, president of Moldova’s Academy of Sciences (ASM), laureate of the State Prize, holder of the Order of the Republic Gheorghe Tabarna marks his 75th birthday anniversary today.
Gheorghe Tabarna was born in Sangerei in 1944. In 1967, he graduated from the Chisinau-based State Medicine Institute, presently the Nicolae Testemiteanu State University of Medicine and Pharmacy; afterwards, in 1967-69, Tabarna attended post-graduate courses at the department of stomatological surgery of the same institution. On the period 1969-1972, Gheorghe Tabarna made his post-graduate courses at the N.N. Blokhin Cancer Research Centre of the Moscow-based Academy of Medical Sciences. In 1972, Tabarna maintained his thesis of doctor in medical sciences and in 1982, - the one of PhD in medicine.
Gheorghe Tabarna worked as scientific employee at the Oncological Institute from Moldova (1972). Starting from 1976 till 1980, he worked as assistant at the department of oncology of the Nicolae Testemitanu State University of Medicine and Pharmacy and during 1980-1990, he was docent of this department, and beginning with 1992 – university professor.
Gheorghe Tabarna organized a new directorate in oncology – department of tumours of head and neck (1977), where he has been working as scientific leader till present. During 1990-1995, he held the office of director of the Oncological Institute, head of the oncology department at the Nicolae Testemitanu State University of Medicine and Pharmacy and starting from 1995 he was deputy director of the Oncological Institute on issues of sciences. Gheorghe Tabarna was the founder of the scientific school of oncological surgery of the region of head and neck from Moldova.
During his work as scientist oncologist, Tabarna edited more than 540 scientific works, of which 16 monographs. He got 11 patents of inventions. Tabarna elaborated new methods of diagnosis and surgical treatment of the tumour of head and neck, especially of the larynx, parotid gland and thyroid gland; he contributed to the establishment of criteria of early diagnosis of cancer and of its prophylaxis. The academician worked out rational and optimum methods of plastic surgery in oncology. Gheorghe Tabarna was the first in Moldova to practice the method of cryosurgery in the treatment of malignant tumours and the micro-surgery method in oncology.
In 2008, Gheorghe Tabarna was awarded the title of laureate of the State Prize for the cycle of works Noi tehnologii în combaterea cancerului (New Technologies in Fighting Cancer). The academician was also awarded the title of Merited Man, the Labour Glory order, the Order of the Republic and the Nicolae Testemitanu medal.
