As of 1 April drivers may drive without using low beam headlights during day

From 1 April, drivers may drive without using low beam headlights during the day. The measure is stipulated in the Road Traffic Regulations.

Press officer of the General Inspectorate of Police Oxana Toderiță emphasized that the requirement to drive with headlights on during the day applies from November 1 to March 31.

“The provision is imposed to reduce the risk of road accidents caused by unstable weather, accompanied during this period by rain, fog and other weather phenomena that significantly reduce visibility in traffic, as well as the fact that it gets dark earlier,” said Oxana Toderiță.

However, even after this period ends, in unfavorable weather conditions it is necessary to switch on the low beam headlights or fog lights.

“Under these conditions, drivers must keep a safe distance between vehicles. Also, avoid risky overtaking, which can become extremely dangerous in low-visibility conditions. Likewise, pedestrians are urged to cross the street only at designated places and only after making sure it is safe,” said Oxana Toderiță.

The requirement to drive with headlights on during the day was first introduced in 2009. Fines for violating this provision range from 300 to 450 lei, without penalty points being applied.
