Moldovan president condemns repeated overflight of Moldova’s airspace by Russian drones
President Maia Sandu today condemned the repeated overflight of the country’s airspace by drones near the border with Ukraine, in the context of air attacks launched by the Russian Federation against Ukraine.
“Just a few hours before Moldova marks 35 years of independence, our airspace was repeatedly violated by Russian drones. I strongly condemn this intimidation,” Maia Sandu wrote on the X network.
The head of state reaffirmed that the Republic of Moldova would continue its European path.
“Moldova remains strong, independent and free, firmly on its path toward EU accession,” the president added.
According to the Defense Ministry, five drones conducted unauthorized flights over the airspace of Moldova on the night of August 27. The aircraft were detected near the border with Ukraine.
The Foreign Affairs Ministry (MAE) firmly condemned the violation of the airspace of Moldova, as well as the incident involving the discovery on the ground of a flying object near the Chisinau–Basarabeasca route. According to the MAE, “the unauthorized overflight of the territory of our country represents a serious violation of the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Republic of Moldova and constitutes a direct risk to the security of our citizens.”
The Republic of Moldova is today marking 35 years since the proclamation of its Independence.
