Old-style Orthodox Christians celebrate Baptism of the Lord

The old-style orthodox Christians today celebrate the Baptism of the Lord. The cycle of traditional winter holidays ends with this holiday, followed by the day of Saint John the Baptist.

The Baptism represents the baptizing of Savior Jesus Christ in the water of Jordan by Saint John the Baptist at the age of 30 years. On this day, religious services are officiated in the churches of Moldova. Afterwards, the great waters are blessed and the environment is purified from malefic forces.

On Baptism, the Moldovans observe more traditions and customs. Depending on the region, the future for the entire year is forecast, the waters are blessed, girls put basil under pillows to dream of their predestinated husbands and men compete in swimming, in order to take out the cross thrown into water by priest.

Under the tradition, on the eve of the Baptism, a dinner resembling the one on the Christmas Eve is cooked in people’s homes.

It is believed that, if trees are filled with hoar frost on the Baptism Eve, they will be full of fruits.

The tradition also says that dirty linen is not washed on Baptism of the Lord. Quarrels are banned on homes on this day and nothing is lent.
