Postal voting of Moldova to be expanded in Japan, Australia
The postal voting will become more accessible and secure for Moldovan citizens in the Diaspora. The parliament today voted a draft law to this effect in its first reading. The document was criticized by the parliamentary opposition.
The legislative initiative, developed by a group of MPs from the Action and Solidarity Party’s faction, includes a string of measures to prevent procedural errors and improve the transparency and security of the electoral process.
The draft comes after the experience of the 2024 presidential election and referendum, when postal voting was implemented for the first time.
Among the important provisions of the document, there are the expansion of the list of countries where postal voting will be enforced, including Japan and Australia; the creation of a distinct electoral council to manage postal voting; and the establishment of clear deadlines for identifying voters and making changes to electoral lists 30 and 20 days before the elections, respectively.
In 2024, this alternative voting way was already enforced in the USA, Canada, Norway, Sweden, Finland and Iceland.
At the end of this week, the document adopted today is to be subject to public discussions.
