U.S. Embassy inaugurates Holocaust photography exhibition at Moldovan university
Chisinau, 27 January /MOLDPRES/-The U.S. Embassy in Chisinau today inaugurated an exhibition entitled “Never!” on the occasion of the International Holocaust Remembrance Day, annually marked on 27 January.
The exhibition was inaugurated at the Free International University of Moldova (ULIM) and exhibits 24 historical photographs belonging to the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum. It also includes images taken in Moldova, representing this sad history.
ULIM rector Andrei Galben said the exhibition had a major importance, as it reminded us of a dramatic phenomenon in the history of Europe and Moldova as well, and namely, the massacre of Jews by Nazi during World War II.
“More than 400 Jews had been killed in Pepeni village, Singerei district, in July 1941. My parents succeeded to save two families of Jews, hosting them for more than half a year. The young generation must know these events in order to prevent Holocaust from happening again,” Galben said.
Attending the event was also U.S. Ambassador to Moldova James D. Pettit. He emphasized that Holocaust had tragic consequences for the Jewish people.
“I found out there was a ghetto in Chisinau downtown during World War II, and Jewish people could not get out of there. Back then, authorities deported Jewish people on the other side of Dniester River. I know that 19 thousand Jews have died in Dubasari solely. It is very important that the new generation knows about this event, in order to avoid it in the future. Those who cannot remember the history are condemned to repeat it,” the ambassador said.
More than six million Jews had been exterminated during World War II.
