Chisinau, 24 October /MOLDPRES/ - Prime Minister Iurie Leanca today congratulated the motorists and road-men on their professional holiday and handed governmental diplomas to those who have achieved outstanding results in the sector, the government's communication and media relations department has reported.

At a meeting with motorists and road-men, the prime minister said the qualitative restoration of Moldovan roads was a priority of the cabinet. "Five years ago, all the road-men were invoking the lack of financing as the main reason for the bad roads. In 2014, over 1.3 billion lei was earmarked for the restoration of roads from the Road Fund, and foreign sources were attracted from development partners," Leanca stressed.

Iurie Leanca highlighted the improvement of the quality of services provided by national companies, as well as measures taken by the government for training specialists in the area of designing and constructing roads. "The tender for the works on restoring the Hincesti-Cimislia highway was won by two local companies. This is a confirmation of the upgrading of the technical and professional capacities of companies from Moldova. At the same time, in 2014, specialities for training road-men were introduced at three vocational schools."

The prime minister urged the road-men and motorists to participate in Moldova's modernisation by applying new European technologies, standards and attitudes. "Moldova's modernisation can be made by us, the citizens of this state! I urge you to do this together, in order to have a country with people looking into the future with confidence," Iurie Leanca said.

More than 9,000 km of roads, of which almost 6,000 are local ones, are managed by the Transport and Roads Infrastructure Ministry. The government increased the allocated sum for roads' rehabilitation from 241 million lei in 2009 up to 1.3 billion lei in 2014. This year, more than 340 million lei was earmarked to repair inter-village roads, access ways to schools, kindergartens, medical institutions and mayoralties from over 700 settlements.

The professional day of motorists and road-men is organised annually on the last Sunday of October.
