Moldovan electoral body presents model of polling station for parliamentary elections

Chisinau, 5 November /MOLDPRES/ - The Central Electoral Commission (CEC) today presented a model of polling station for the 30 November parliamentary elections.

CEC Head Iurie Ciocan said that about 1,200 polling stations would be opened for the 2014 parliamentary polls. At the same time, over 22,000 people will be involved in organising and carrying out the ballot.

For the first time ever, CEC standardised the electoral equipment of the voting stations for the 30 November elections. Thus, 80-litre and 45-litre mat plastic ballot boxes will be used during the polls. Besides these, mobile ballot boxes will also be used. The voting booths will also be of the same type in all polling stations: they will be of white colour and the CEC logo will be printed on the,  just as on the ballot boxes. Additionally, a ballot box for persons with special needs will be installed in each voting station.

Each electoral bureau of the polling station will receive by two laptops connected to the Internet, through which the operators, on the date of elections, will check the data of voters in the state register of electors and register their participation in the voting.

CEC representatives also explained the way the citizens would vote on 30 November. Thus, the voter, who will come to the polling station, will be directed to operators. The latter check the data in the electors' register and record the participation in voting. Subsequently, the elector will go to the table of the electoral bureau's members, present the identity card and put his/her signature in the electoral list. The bureau member will put the security stamp on the voter's identity card and hand him/her over the ballot paper. The elector will go to the voting booth and, afterwards, to the ballot box, in order to put in the ballot paper.

The new electoral equipment was purchased from a joint fund of Moldova and Norwegian government, within UNDP Programme for Democracy. The overall cost  of the acquisitions, which include, in particular, about 7,000 secret voting booths and 10,000 ballot boxes, is over 400,000 dollars.
