Germany offers two million euros to improve energy efficiency in Moldovan villages

Chisinau, 12 December /MOLDPRES/ - Prime Minister Iurie Leanca and Kreditanstalt für Wiederaufbau (KfW) Project Manager for Ukraine and Moldova Gunnar Wälzholz signed an Agreement on the extension of a German assistance programme by more 2 million euros, the government’s communication and media relations department has reported.

The money is earmarked for the financing of energy efficiency projects in ten districts in northern Moldova, as well as in the Transnistrian region.

The project’s goal is the sustainable use of improved municipal services as well as a more efficient use of energy by consumers.

Prime Minister Iurie Leanca said that these projects would bring significant economic and social benefits to village residents.

"Thus, we will continue to invest in our future, across the country, so that we can offer citizens a modern social infrastructure. I am grateful for the investments you make in Moldova, especially in rural areas, "said the prime minister.

For his part, Gunnar Wälzholz announced that the German KfW Development Bank would open an office in Chisinau in 2015: "We intend to continue to contribute to the diversification of financing instruments to small and medium enterprises in Moldova and invest in various social projects ".

KfW Bank’s assistance programme offered a total of 12 million euros in grants through the Social Investment Fund Moldova, and so far about 90 projects have been, or are being implemented.

The programmes aim at repairing and renovating kindergartens (59 projects), aqueducts (13), roads (10) hospitals (3), street lighting (2), and centres for the youth (1) and elderly (1).

KfW is one of the leaders of the German banking sector and one of the largest banks in Europe, oriented both at supporting national economy, as well as developing states in transition. KfW has 70 branches and offices worldwide.
