Chisinau, 18 December /MOLDPRES/ - Business people from Moldova today participated in a Regional forum titled "EU assistance for the economic development of Moldova," held in Chisinau and organised by the EU Delegation in Moldova.

In his speech in the opening of the forum, Head of EU Delegation in Moldova, Ambassador Pirkka Tapiola said that "this is a very important event for Moldova, following the signing of the Association Agreement with the European Union and the Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade Agreement (DCFTA). We want prosperity for Moldova and we want people to feel good in their country”, said the official.

Tapiola noted that, by the signing of the Free Trade Agreement, Moldovan companies would benefit from access to new EU markets and that Moldovan producers were able to increase their exports to European markets. In this respect, Pirkka Tapiola said the country "has a fantastic agricultural sector" and that the sale of fruit and vegetables on European Union markets would easily grow. The official expressed confidence that the above-mentioned Agreement would be successful for Moldova and, in the near future, a shift would take place in Moldova, with a major increase in exports to EU markets.

Attending the forum, Deputy Economics Minister Octavian Calmic said the Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade Agreement was part of the Association Agreement with the European Union, and offered Moldova the chance to align with international practices. The country’s goal is to expand domestic exports to the EU, and namely the Free Trade Agreement is an opportunity to develop trade and economic cooperation relations between Moldova and European countries.

The deputy minister also stressed that the exports of Moldovan goods to the EU countries increased by almost 13 per cent over 10 months of this year. On the same period, there was an increase by over 40 per cent of domestic merchandise exported to Italy, about 39 per cent - to the Netherlands, 31 per cent - to Germany, etc.
