Moldovan Justice Ministry presents draft on reform of prosecution

Chisinau, 21 April /MOLDPRES/ - The draft law on the Prosecution reform in Moldova, elaborated based on recommendations of the Venice Commission, was presented at an international conference in Chisinau today.
Under the document, among the basic aims of the reform, there are: enhancing the independence and accountability of prosecutors, ensuring the principles of legality and respect for human rights at all stages of prosecution.
At the conference, Parliament Speaker Andrian Candu said that he hoped the draft was adopted by parliament till late next June.
An advisor to the prime minister, Serghei Diaconu, said the prosecution reform was a priority for the government, which aimed "to ensure citizens' trust in law enforcement institutions."
A representative of the EU Delegation in Moldova, Wicher Slagter ,said the new law was consistent with international standards and would ensure independence and depoliticising of the body.
According to the draft, the prosecutor general is elected for a term of seven years, based on a contest. The candidate could not have been a member of any political party or conducted political activity in the last three years.
The reform of the Prosecution is stipulated in Agreement on budget support, provided by EU to Moldova. Annually, the European Union transfers the 60 million offered for the justice reform in instalments.
