Council of Europe to provide Moldova with assistance to prevent, fight discrimination

Chisinau, 13 November /MOLDPRES/ - The European Union's and Council of Europe's (CoE) Joint Programme on Supporting National Efforts to Prevent and Combat Discrimination in Moldova was launched in Chisinau today. 

Attending the event were Moldovan, European officials, as well as representatives of non-governmental and international organisations working in the human rights' protection field. 

According to Head of the Council of Europe's Office in Moldova Jose-Louis Herrero, "the CoE will provide every needed assistance and support to efficient enforce the legal norms concerning the fight and protection of citizens' against the discrimination phenomenon."  

The official said that, in Moldova, "the situation in terms discrimination is at a stage when intensive work should be carried out and adjusting to the European standards should be made. The adoption of the law on equality of chances and creation of the council for prevention and removing discrimination are the main steps Moldova has made to protect discriminated citizens. Nevertheless, the Moldovan authorities must fulfill all commitments assumed before the European partners." 

The main objective of the project is to back policies and practices concerning the human rights through ensuring the compliance of the legislative framework and the one of regulating the juridical sector. 

The project is part of the 2013-2016 action plan of the Council of Europe to support democratic reforms and is included in the agenda of association between the European Union and Moldova.
