Moldovan speaker, EU rapporteur hold meeting in Brussels

Chisinau, 16 November /MOLDPRES/-Parliament Speaker Andrian Candu met the rapporteur of the European Parliament for Moldova, Petras Auštrevičius, during his first official visit to Brussels in tenure of parliament speaker today, the parliament’s communication and public relations department has reported.

The officials’ meeting began with a minute of silence in the memory of the terrorist attacks held in France, at the end of the last week. The presidents of all the EU states urged European citizens to observe a minute of silence in the memory of the victims, on 16 November at lunch.

Both Auštrevičius and Candu assured that Moldova was further firmly committed to implement reforms and continue its EU integration course.

The speaker strengthened that Moldovan top authorities were determined to reform of the financial-banking and justice systems, curb corruption, consolidate energy security and enhance the business environment.

The officials focused on Moldova’s financial-banking crisis and discussed ways to stabilize its macroeconomic situation. “Chisinau’s political life continues to be focused on the settlement of the banking crisis. We need a stable parliamentary majority to adopt the legislative package carried out with the support of foreign experts in order to regulate the activity of the financial-banking sector, set up clear rules and avoid similar situations in the future,” Candu said.

Candu said it was very important that reforms are implemented, especially those related to justice and fighting corruption, so that Moldovan citizens could regain their confidence in state institutions. To achieve positive results in this sense, Moldovan authorities count on the support of the EU expert mission to Moldova to assess its institutions.

For his part, the European rapporteur said the EU was closely following the events in Moldova. He urged top political authorities in Chisinau to take determinant actions to unblock the internal situation. “The EU continues to be Moldova’s committed and long-term partner; however, given its commitment to follow the EU integration course, Moldova must speed up reforms to fully enjoy the benefits of the Association Agreement, “Auštrevičius said.

Parliament Speaker Andrian Candu today started his two-day official visit to Brussels. The Moldovan official will hold meetings with more EU top officials. Candu’s visit takes place within the context of marking the first year since the European Parliament has ratified the Moldova-EU Association Agreement.
