Moldova goes up eight positions in global informational development ranking

Chisinau, 2 December /MOLDPRES/-Moldova has gone up eight positions in the world ranking on the evolution of the informational society, and ranks 66 out of 167 countries included in the ranking.

The ranking is part of the “Measuring the Information Society 2015” annual report unveiled by the International Telecommunication Union during the 13th World Telecommunication/ICT Indicators Symposium (WTIS) in Hiroshima, Japan , on 30 November-2 December.

Globally, Moldova is one of the countries with averagely developed information and communications technologies. The trend is maintained at the European level as well. Experts say Moldova is getting closer to Romania and overcomes Ukraine, which ranks 79.  

According to the report, leading countries in the field of informational technologies are South Korea, Denmark, Island, Great Britain, Sweden, Luxembourg, Switzerland, Netherlands, Hong Kong and Norway. Approximately 3.2 billion people or 43.4 per cent of the world’s population are connected to the internet, and 95 per cent of the population is using mobile telephony.

The report uses indicators and quantitative reference criteria to assess the progress of informational and communications technologies in the development of the global informational society. The report focuses on the ICT Development Index made up of 11 indicators. The index was first introduced by the International Telecommunication Union in March 2009 to compare time development and evolution of the ICT sector.
