Moldovan delegation attends meeting of UN Steering Committee on Trade Capacity and Standards

Chisinau, 30 May /MOLDPRES/- A Moldovan delegation, led by Deputy Prime Minister Gheorghe Balan, participated in the second session of the Steering Committee on Trade Capacity and Standards of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe, with headquarters in Geneva, on 25-28 May 2016, the Bureau for Reintegration has reported.

The member states of the UN Economic Commission for Europe (UNICEF), as well as representatives of the UN specialized agencies and development partners participated in the session, chaired by Ambassador, Moldova’s Permanent Representative to the UN Office in Geneva Ulianovschi Tudor.

The situation of the economic agents from both banks of Dniester, commercial and regulatory obstacles to development of the business environment, as well as consolidation of trade facilitation capacities for economic providers from all over Moldova represent the topic of the discussions within UNECE, as a result of a draft study carried out in by UN experts in 2015-2016.

In his speech, Gheorghe Balan welcomed the involvement of the UN Economic Commission for Europe in carrying out the first stage of  the UN study on the trade obstacles in Moldova. He thanked the Swiss government for providing financial support to implement such a project in Moldova for the first time ever. At the same time, Balan pointed out the Moldovan government’s firm commitment to continue enforcing the reforms on optimizing the activity of economic agents from both banks of Dniester and fully turning to good account the country’s commitments, in line with the global system practices and roadmap on the implementation of the EU-Moldova Association Agreement.

The Moldovan delegation was made up of representatives of the Economics Ministry, National Agency for Food Safety, National Standards Institute and National Centre of Accreditation. They unveiled the government’s reforms in facilitating regulatory procedures, in order to remove trade and customs barriers, simplify products classification procedure, certify and register goods and trade services, standardization, metrology, improving agri-food products quality, as well as adjusting the governmental policies to the international electronic commerce standards.

The UN Economic Commission for Europe is an intergovernmental organization, composed of 56 member states, with headquarters in Geneva, which assists the national governments in integrating local economies in the global economy by involving the development partners.
