PM convenes urgent meeting on floods in southern Moldova

Chisinau, 14 June /MOLDPRES/ - The situation emerged following the last night heavy rains in southern Ceadir-Lunga town and measures taken to help the people hit by the calamity were considered at a today urgent meeting at the government, convened by Prime Minister Pavel Filip, the government’s communication and media relations department has reported.

According to information unveiled by the deputy head of the Civil Protection and Emergency Situations Service (SPCSE), Alexandru Oprea, after the last night heavy rains, 58 households from Ceadir-Lunga were flooded, of which 16 dwellings and 41 cellars, yards and gardens, as well as the territory of the goods market.

In the case of six adobe houses, the walls were damaged. To evacuate people from houses and pump water from households, forces of the Emergency Situations Department from Gagauzia were mobilized, being additionally detached forces from the Cahul-based Emergency Situations Department, 45 firemen and rescuers in all. Twenty one people, including 4 children, were evacuated from dwellings hit by rains. The affected people were accommodated at relatives and a local  health centre.

The situation is monitored in non-stop regime, and rescue teams are permanently working to pump water from buildings.

Pavel Filip demanded maximum mobilization to as quickly as possible remove the consequences of the rains and assess the damage for providing assistance to flood victims on behalf of the government. The decision is to be approved at a cabinet meeting due on 15 June.

Data by the State Hydrometeorological Service shows that, on 13 June evening, there was a quanity of rainfall as much as for three months in Ceadir-Lunga.
