Moldovan speaker meets delegation of Venice Commission

Chisinau, 12 September /MOLDPRES/- Parliament Speaker Andrian Candu today met a delegation of the Venice Commission, on a fact-collecting visit to Moldova, the parliament’s communication and public relations department has reported.

The delegation is made up of President of sub-commission for the protection of minorities Jan Velaers, Vice-President of the Fundamental Rights Sub-Committee Nicols Alivizatos and the head of department for democratic institutions and fundamental rights within the Secretariat of the Venice Commission, Artemiza-Tatiana Chisca. The visit is carried out in the context of approval by the Venice Commission of a draft law on ethnocultural status of Taraclia district.

The main issues were focused on provisions of the draft law, minority protection in Moldova, as well as political evolutions in the country in the context of the presidential elections.

The speaker appreciated the interest the Council of Europe was following the evolutions in the country, noting that the expertise was useful in the efforts of implementing the reform agenda in Moldova. Candu also referred to the priorities of the parliament’s autumn session, focused on parliamentary control and assessing the implementation of laws.

“Before the presidential elections, there will not be on the parliamentary agenda issues meant to provoke intense political debates in order not to use the parliament’s rostrum for electoral purposes. Projects due to be on the agenda will be the ones of public interest, such as, ensuring security in energy sector, fulfilling the IMF preconditions etc,” Candu said.

The delegation announced that the institution’s opinion would be made public, after the draft was discussed at one of next meetings.

The delegation of the Venice Commission pays a fact-collecting visit to Moldova on 11-14 September. The officials will have more meetings with MPs, ministers, as well as with representatives of diplomatic staff accredited to Chisinau. At the same time, the delegation will also visit Taraclia district.
