Chisinau, 21 March /MOLDPRES/ - The Centru law court of Chisinau on 20 March suspended a decree by President Igor Dodon on the withdrawal of Moldova’s citizenship from the former Romanian president, Traian Basescu, till the settlement of the cause. The lawyer of Traian Basescu, Andrei Bivol, has confirmed the information for MOLDPRES.

According to Bivol, after the suspension of the decree, the latter will not produce legal effects. “The cause is at the preparatory stage. Till 2 May, the defendant is to submit the reference and evidence on the basis of which the citizenship was withdrawn. Subsequently, on 3-12 May, we will already present counter-evidence, and the first court session will take place on 16 May,” Andrei Bivol said.

President Igor Dodon in early last January signed a decree on the withdrawal of the Moldovan citizenship from Traian Basescu. At that time, the head of state said that “the citizenship was provided to Mr. Basescu illegally, as numerous notifications on behalf of more institutions, which saw that Traian Basescu was under criminal investigation on more counts in Romania, were ignored; yet, he hid this essential fact, which represents a ground for the withdrawal of the citizenship under the legal norm.” Subsequently, the former president of Romania, Traian Basescu, sued Igor Dodon at law for the fact of withdrawal of Moldova’s citizenship.
