Centre for abused women to be opened in administrative centre from south Moldova autonomy

Chisinau, 12 February /MOLDPRES/ - A centre for women who suffered from domestic violence acts will be opened in Comrat. An agreement on the issue has been recently signed between the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the executive body of the Gagauz-Yeri Autonomous Territorial Unit (UTA Gagauz-Yeri).    

According to the autonomy’s deputy governor, Olesea Tanasoglo, the region’s authorities will contribute, by all means, to the opening of this centre, in order to back women at risk. “We will do our utmost for the issue of violence to appear rarer and rarer in our families and the centre should develop and provide security, shelter and support to women who have got in deadlock,” said Olesea Tanasoglo, cited by the website www.gagauzinfo.md.     

The Comrat centre could host up to 20 women, who will be able to find here needed shelter and support for a six-month period. The institution will be designed, so that each woman has separate chamber and the kitchen is common. Besides accommodation, women will also benefit from psychological counseling.

A building, offered by the Gagauz autonomy’s authorities, will be arranged for this centre. As much as 90,000 dollars will be allocated for the project’s financing; yet, another 15,000 dollars is necessary, which is to be collected from donations.

The initiative from Comrat is backed by the project, Combating violence against women in Moldova: exploring and learning from local solutions, implemented by UNDP with the support of the South Korea government. Within this project, services of support for victims of the gender-based violence will be created in UTA Gagauzia. Women from five communities of the region, including the Comrat city, will be able to benefit from counseling of psychologists, social assistants and jurists. They will be helped to find a job or start a business.    

Statistics data shows that each fourth woman from Moldova is subjected to a certain form of violence.
