Court of Appeal quashed Chisinau court's decision, which canceled local election results of 2018

Chisinau, 9 October /MOLDPRES/- The Chisinau Court of Appeal ruled on 8 October a new decision confirming the results of the local elections of 2018, after which Andrei Nastase was elected mayor of Chisinau municipality. At the same time, the members of the Central Election Commission announce that the decision of the Court of Appeal will have no impact on the local elections due on 20 October and after which a new mayor of Chisinau will be elected.

In the decision issued yesterday, the magistrates of the Court of Appeal noted that "it is considered elected as a result of the new local elections of the mayor of Chisinau on 10 May 2018 (first round) – 3 June 2018 (round II), candidate of the Dignity and Truth Platform Party Andrei Nastase”.

Following the decision of the Court of Appeal, CEC Secretary Maxim Lebedinschi said that Andrei Năstase can serve as mayor until the new mayor's mandate is validated, which will be elected after the 20 October elections.

“If Andrei Năstase still decides to run for the local elections, then he will have to suspend his position as mayor. At the same time, within 30 days, Nastase must decide whether to remain in the position of general mayor or minister of Internal Affairs ”, Lebedinschi said.

Today, at a press conference, Nastase said that the decision of the Court of Appeal is due to the fact that the file reached the European Court of Human Rights, which sent a communication to the Moldovan authorities. "Without this ECHR communication, such a decision would probably never have existed," Nastase said.

"Regardless of what happens next, we go ahead in this campaign to beat democratically. I have a moral duty towards the people who elected me. It has been demonstrated that truth is on our side. Now we just have to vote and reconfirm last year's results, ” he said.

19 candidates were registered for mayor position, one of them withdrew.
