Winter is not only a cold season, but also an opportunity for unusual travels and quite special adventures. This week, we return to the Calarasi district and urge you to discover the vine-growing and wine-making treasure from the Pitusca village – the Tataru Wines Wine Cellar.

The wine cellar, founded by Vasile Tataru, represents a family business which combines the passion for wines with the respect for the cultural heritage.

„My family started making wine ever since the 2000s, but the brand was created in 2019. We have been on the Moldovan market for four years. We everybody got involved: mother, father, me and my brother. This is a family business,’’ Pavel Tataru said.

The wine cellar is just under the house where the family lives, and a tasting room was set in the yard, where visitors can enjoy a good wine and traditional dishes. It is important for you to know that all visits are made by scheduling.

„We are not a restaurant; therefore, we do not work every day. Scheduling is necessary, for us to prepare in advance. The price varies depending on the type and quality of the dishes. As usual, we cook fried fish on plate, pies, roast meat. Mother is cooking the meal and most products are natural, from our village,’’ Pavel said.

The Tataru family started the business with several types of wines: Muscat, Chardonnay, Cabernet Merlot and Rose. It owns now seven hectares of vineyard and one can find in its cellar also Aligote, Feteasca Regală and Feteasca Neagra.

People who come to the wine cellar are given a special present.

„We call it Rainbow. This is a must of grapes in layers which is not combined. Most people come namely to discover this types of wine; they get surprised,’’ Pavel also said.

Despite the challenges triggered by the pandemic, the Tataru family proved resilience and creativeness in the adaptation to the new conditions.

„We opened the tasting room in 2021. It was difficult, but we moved on. The room was needed; otherwise, we were not able to interact with tourists. In the last years, we not have pressing machine, we were using the wine press; yet, we have recently won a project and with the help of those from USAID, we managed to buy a pneumatic press which helps us a lot; the manual work became automatic and the quality of the wine improved,’’ Pavel noted.

Presently, the author wines can be purchased just at the cellar, in the Cellar Wines of Moldova and in the online shop www.3debine.md. The Tataru family is set to consolidate its presence on the HoReCa market and its main goal is to cross the Prut river.

„For this, we need many documents, as well as big quantities of wine. In the near future, we want to arrange a modern open-type room for the production of wine, where all cisterns, grapes will be stored at a certain temperature,’’ Pavel also said.

The Tataru wine cellar is waiting for you with widely open arms just in the winter months, despite the fact that this a less demanded period. Nevertheless, namely winter brings a magic and calm atmosphere in which guests can discover the special delight of the cellar.
