Moldovan parliament speaker has meeting with Lithuanian counterpart
Chisinau, 24 January /MOLDPRES/ - Parliament Speaker Igor Grosu today had a meeting with Parliament Speaker of Lithuania Viktorija Čmilytė-Nielse, on a visit to Moldova, at an invitation by the Moldovan speaker, the parliament’s communication and public relations general department has reported.
The delegation of the Lithuanian Seimas also includes Deputy Parliament Speaker Andrius Mazuronis, the head of the group for inter-parliamentary relations with Moldova, Kazys Starkevičius, and other officials.
Attending the meeting was the head of the Moldovan parliament’s commission for foreign policy and European integration, Doina Gherman.
The officials discussed the bilateral agenda between the two countries, including the opportunities of boosting the inter-parliamentary cooperation and pointed out the priorities for future.
At the meeting, Igor Grosu said that the parliament had an ambitious agenda and the zero priority was the justice reform and the combating of corruption. ‘’The current crises, the energy and the pandemic ones, have proved the importance of functional institutions,’’ the speaker said.
Another subject tackled was the energy crisis. The interlocutors agreed that the Lithuanian side helps with expertise for strengthening the energy sector of Moldova, - a process through which the energy sources should be diversified and the country’s energy independence should be ensured. The officials agreed on boosting the cooperation in combating the misinformation, where Lithuania’s experience can be quite useful for Moldova.
The two parliament speakers exchanged opinions on the complex regional situation. In this respect, Igor Grosu reiterated that the Chisinau authorities kept a close eye on the situation in the region and the integrity of a country must be observed.
At the same time, the sides agreed on the fostering of cooperation in the following sectors of interest: constructions, renewable energy, infrastructure and agriculture.
On behalf of the Moldovan citizens, Speaker Igor Grosu expressed gratitude for the assistance provided in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic and the gas crisis, as well as for the support of Moldova’s European integration efforts, provided by Lithuania, including within the Eastern Partnership.
”I made sure once again that we have friends who support the European integration of Moldova; thus, we are determined to advance in the process of Moldova’s transformation for the benefit of the citizens,’’ Parliament Speaker Igor Grosu added.
