Moldovan president welcomes Constitutional Court's ruling on simplifying confiscation of unjustified wealth
Chisinau, 15 March /MOLDPRES/ - President Maia Sandu in a public message welcomes the Constitutional Court’s (CCM) ruling from 10 March 2022, made public today, which allows a simplified procedure of confiscation of the unjustified wealth, the presidential press service has reported.
The head of state says that, starting from today, the justice system has all instruments necessary to penalize those who enriched themselves from illegal activities. At the same time, the Moldovan president specifies that, from now on, the confiscation of wealth will be able to take place including if the person against whom there are suspicions of owning illicit wealth will not be able to justify the legal origin of the assets. Under its decision, CCM established that this fact was possible within the current provisions of Moldova’s Constitution and the amendment of the Fundamental Law will not be necessary, the Moldovan president also said.
„CCM thus confirmed the adjusting of the national constitutional system to the European standards as to the combating of the big corruption, money laundering and illicit enrichment. The justice system can no longer put the blame on the legislative obstacles and is obliged to prove real results in the confiscation of illegally gained wealth,’’ President Maia Sandu said in her message.
