Foreign Ministry summons Russia’s Ambassador after several drones violated Moldova’s airspace

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs condemns the violation of the Republic of Moldova’s airspace by three drones amid the massive attacks carried out by the Russian Federation against Ukraine. Two of the aircraft crashed and exploded on the country’s territory. In this context, Russia’s ambassador-designate to Chișinău was summoned to the MFA today, October 1.

The Ministry states that these incidents directly threaten the security of the citizens of the Republic of Moldova and calls on the Russian Federation to stop its attacks against Ukraine and any actions that endanger the Republic of Moldova.

The most serious incident occurred on Wednesday evening near the village of Brănești, Orhei district. According to the MFA, the drone, a Geran model equipped with a turbojet engine, struck trees and exploded near a public road. Fragments of the aircraft were found within a radius of approximately 120 meters.

Following the incident, road traffic in the area was temporarily suspended, and the airspace over the central region was closed.

According to the preliminary findings of experts from the Police Technical and Explosives Department, the object found near the Ivancea–Brănești road contains elements specific to a Geran drone. Experts determined that the aircraft likely collided with the trees, after which it fell to the ground and exploded.

Law enforcement authorities are continuing their examination to establish all the circumstances and characteristics of the object.
