Moldovan president condemns Russian attack on shopping center in Kryvyi Rih, Ukraine

President Maia Sandu condemns the Russian attacks on the Ukrainian city of Kryvyi Rih, after a shopping center was hit by drones and the death toll reached at least 16 people and over 130 injured, including children.

The head of state described the attacks as “barbaric” and expressed solidarity with the families of the victims and with those who were wounded.

“Appalled by Russia’s barbaric attacks on the city of Kryvyi Rih and other cities. Our thoughts are with the families mourning their loved ones and with all those injured, including so many children,” Maia Sandu wrote in a message posted on the X platform.

The attack took place on August 21, in the hometown of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. According to Ukrainian authorities, drones struck the shopping center in two waves, about 30 minutes apart. The second strike occurred after the arrival of emergency teams and, according to Zelensky, also targeted rescuers.

Among the injured, there are numerous children, and Ukrainian authorities have also reported missing persons. The attack also caused casualties among employees of the ArcelorMittal plant in Kryvyi Rih.

The attack on the Ukrainian city was also condemned by the European Union. The EU’s foreign policy chief, Kaja Kallas, described the strike as “terror by design.”
