Russia’s Ambassador-Designate summoned to Moldova’s Foreign Affairs Ministry; Oleg Ozerov receives protest note, after three drones violated Moldova’s airspace in a single day

The Foreign Affairs Ministry (MAE) today summoned the ambassador-designate of the Russian Federation to Moldova Oleg Ozerov and handed him a protest note, after three drones violated the airspace of Moldova in a single day. Two of them fell and exploded on the country’s territory. Over the past seven days, the country’s airspace has been violated eight times.

The MAE said that “Moldova strongly condemns this serious violation of its sovereignty, which directly endangered the lives of its citizens. It also condemns the Russian Federation’s war of aggression against Ukraine, which threatens the security of the entire region.”

The Air Operations Service of the National Army on September 30 reported that an unauthorized flight had been detected in the airspace of Moldova at 20:45, amid the Russian Federation’s massive attacks on Ukraine. Subsequently, a drone exploded in Ivancea, Orhei.

The Moldovan authorities strongly condemned these incidents, noting that they directly threaten the security of Moldova’s citizens and called on the Russian Federation to stop its attacks on Ukraine and any actions that endanger Moldova.

Since the beginning of the war in Ukraine, the airspace of Moldova has been illegally overflown more than 80 times. The Moldovan authorities have repeatedly submitted protest notes to the ambassador-designate of the Russian Federation, emphasizing that, although the drones do not directly target Moldova, their flight paths—associated with attacks on Ukraine—pose an increased risk to national security.
