Level of pollution in Moldova's Giurgiulesti Port's area stays high, ecologists say
Chisinau, 20 January /MOLDPRES/ - The Environment Agency today informed that the level of air’s pollution in the area of the Giurgiulesti International Port, south Moldova, stayed high as regards the content of phenol, recorded within the limits from 1.2- up to 3.3-fold of exceeding the sanitary norm.
The data was established as a result of the emergency situation, triggered by the outburst of a fire in the Port’s area, after the Ministry of Environment, Waters and Woods of Romania had made available to environment specialists from Moldova a mobile laboratory with equipment specialized in establishing a vast string of polluting substances in the atmospheric air.
Thus, specialists of the Reference Environment Laboratory of the Environment Agency, jointly with the mobile laboratory from Romania, collected samples of air in various points from the incident’s place and for different meteorological conditions (direction of wind, wind’s speed, night time, day time, etc).
„Taking into account that the consequences of the fire can have negative impact on the health, the mobile laboratory from Romania was transferred to the residential zone of the Giurgiulesti settlement, in order to monitor the air’s quality during 24 hours. After the results of the analyses got from the mobile laboratory of Romania’s National Agency for Environmental Protection are generalized, assessed and validated, we will come up with an updated and more ample information on this subject,’’ the Environment Agency said.
On 16 January morning, a fire outburst at the Giurgiulesti International Port. It occurred following the collapse of a reservoir for preserving sunflower groats. Also, firemen intervened at the Giurgiulesti Port also today morning, in order to extinguish the fire at another reservoir (No 2), loaded with groats of sunflower seeds, which took fire.
