Moldovan PM meets European officials in Brussels

Chisinau, 13 October /MOLDPRES/- Prime Minister Valeriu Strelet paid a visit to Brussels on 12 October. He met Vice President of the European Commission for Energy Union Maroš Šefčovič, the government's communication and media relations department has reported.

The prime minister said that the energy security sector was one of the important issues for Moldova and welcomed the EU's constant support for strengthening the energy capacities by carrying out the infrastructure projects in energy sector Ungheni-Chisinau. Valeriu Strelet referred, in particular, to the Iasi-Ungheni inter-connector and need to extend the pipeline on the Ungheni-Chisinau segment.

Maroš Šefčovič proposed that, after the completion of the feasibility study, Moldovan and European experts elaborate an action plan for cooperation and attraction of financial assistance from donor organisations. The official highly appreciated the government's interest in developing alternative energy sources, pointing out that the EU was willing to provide expertise in the field.

Valeriu Strelet highlighted the adjustment of Moldovan legislation in the energy sector to EU standards, referring to transposing the Third Energy Package within the normative framework.

The prime minister signed a memorandum of understanding on Moldova's participation in the Central East South Europe Gas Connectivity High Level Group, that would enhance Moldova's access to the regional networks of gas supply.

In Brussels, Strelet met Vice President of European Commission Valdis Dombrovskis. The two officials discussed the macroeconomic stability in Moldova, situation in the financial and banking sector, as well as the actions taken by the Moldovan authorities to stabilize the banking sector. The prime minister appreciated the expertise offered by EU. The sides reiterated the importance of signing a memorandum with the International Monetary Fund, to be able to continue implementing the programmes on financial assistance.
