Chisinau, 29 July /MOLDPRES/ – Moldova today marks the 22nd anniversary of the adoption of the Constitution.

On this occasion,  a solemn ceremony attended by more high-ranking officials was organised at the Palace of the Republic.

Attending the event, Moldovan President Nicolae Timofti said that "namely the Constitution is the witness of the historical transformations of a nation, and the role of the Constitutional Court (CCM) is to guarantee the rule of law. The Constitution says that Moldova is a sovereign, independent, unitary and indivisible state – namely this must be the sacramental oath for those representing the constitutional authority in the state. What I wish now, is that in the text of the Constitution as soon as possible contains a distinct article titled "The Integration into the European Union," at the basis of which the institutional reforms and the ones of civic consciousness should stay. On the occasion of the today holiday, I offer all citizens sincere congratulations, along with the best wishes of prosperity", said Timofti.

Parliament Speaker Andrian Candu noted that, this year, Moldova marked the 25th anniversary of its independence, "which is guaranteed by the Constitution, which underpins the rights and values of a democratic state. We thank the CCM team, which by its work ensures observance of the fundamental principles and rights of the citizens. At the same time, after 25 years of independence, we must carry on with the lessons learned to guarantee prosperity, stability and a better life for the people," said Candu.

For his part, Prime Minister Pavel Filip noted that the supreme law is a "the birth certificate of democracy, guaranteeing protection of the rights and independence of the country. The Constitution is the core of social values and legal system. Therefore, we must continue to aspire for a better life, a life like in the European Union, so that we get there united and resolute," said Filip.

At the same time, CCM President Alexandru Tanase said that the most important state regulations were included in the Constitution. "Namely the fundamental law protects the citizens from abuses on behalf of the state power and places the governors' power into the hands of people. The fundamental law represents a link that connects groups in a single state. Therefore, I convey you my sincerest congratulations on the occasion of the Constitution Day," said Tanase.

Moldova's Constitution was adopted on 29 July 1994 and entered into force on 27 August 1994. The supreme law stipulates that Moldova is a sovereign, independent, unitary and indivisible state.
