Number of Moldovan children with special needs going to school increase by 45 per cent in last years

Chisinau, 6 December /MOLDPRES/ - As many as 9,952 children with special education needs study at general education institutions from Moldova in 2018, which is by about 45 per cent more against 2013. The data was made public at a national conference on ensuring the right to education for children with disabilities today.   

The conference was organized by the Education, Culture and Research Ministry, along with the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF Moldova) and the Alliance of NGOs active in the sector of protection of family and child, in the context of implementing the programme on development of inclusive education in Moldova for 2011-2020.     

Attending the event, the state secretary at the Education, Culture and Research Ministry, Andrei Chistol, said that the education system and the related ones were continuously adapting to carry out the quality education for everybody. “No child can be excluded from the education system because of disability. The inclusive education demands recognition of changes within the entire education system. We agree with the fact that there cannot be two education systems: general schools and special schools. We recognize that we are not able to implement this provision immediately, as long as we do not achieve the commitment of ensuring willingness, accessibility, acceptability and adaptability of the education system on the whole,” Chistol noted.   

The participants in the conference adopted a resolution, according to which the authorities, institutions from education, social assistance and health, parents and children, members of the civil society take joint commitment to cooperate for removing obstacles and creating opportunities of access to education for all children.
