Moldova to receive EU accession roadmap by year-end

On 28 October, Moldova will receive a roadmap outlining the next steps in the process of joining the European Union. The document will be presented by the European Commission together with the EU enlargement reports and will include indicative stages, deadlines, and concrete objectives for the most advanced candidate countries, Deputy Prime Minister for European Integration Cristina Gherasimov said at today's cabinet meeting.

According to the official, the Republic of Moldova will receive this roadmap alongside Montenegro, Albania, and Ukraine. The document will contain an indicative timetable for completing the accession negotiations.

“This is important because it places us among the leading countries in the negotiation process. It means that we are a country that delivers and is seriously determined to advance in the negotiation process. This roadmap will be presented by the end of this year and will include exact deliverables and an indicative timetable for completing the accession negotiations. For us, this means greater predictability in the negotiation process,” Cristina Gherasimov said.

The Deputy Prime Minister also welcomed the package of measures concerning EU policy in the context of enlargement, announced by European Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos.

“This is a clear sign that the European Union is preparing for the enlargement process and for the acceptance of new members. All the Commission’s proposals come in the context of adapting the European Union for new members, so that it can be as effective as possible and provide benefits to all European citizens,” Gherasimov said.

She noted that, until now, preparations for enlargement had been discussed, while the European Commission’s proposals are now being put before EU leaders, who are expected to decide on the Union’s future configuration.

For his part, Prime Minister Vasile Tofan said that the Republic of Moldova is at an advanced stage of the accession process and warned that propaganda will intensify as the country draws closer to its goal of European integration.

“We are at a fairly advanced stage, even if it may seem to us that the process is taking a long time. The closer we get to this moment, the more vocal the propaganda will become, as it understands that the moment is approaching. I believe we must be prepared for the fact that this propaganda will intensify considerably and will try to divert us from this path. I believe this should make us even more determined to continue, despite all attempts to destabilize us and obstruct our European path. With that, I would like to thank you all for the work you have done,” the prime minister said.
