Republic of Moldova opens accession negotiations with EU for External Relations Cluster
The Republic of Moldova will officially open accession negotiations with the European Union for Cluster 6 “External Relations”, after the 27 EU member states unanimously adopted today the common negotiating position and decided to convene the third Moldova–European Union Intergovernmental Conference.
Deputy Prime Minister for European Integration Cristina Gherasimov made the statement, noting that the meeting will take place on 14 July in Brussels.
“Today’s decision confirms that the Republic of Moldova continues to advance in the accession process based on its own merits, with the unanimous support of all EU member states,” said Cristina Gherasimov.
The delegation of the Republic of Moldova to the Intergovernmental Conference will be headed by Acting Prime Minister Eugeniu Osmochescu. The meeting is scheduled to start at 18:00, Chisinau time.
At the end of the conference, starting at 19:30, a joint press conference will be held by the European Commissioner for Neighbourhood and Enlargement, Marta Kos, the Irish Minister for European Affairs and Defence, Thomas Byrne, and the Acting Prime Minister of the Republic of Moldova, Eugeniu Osmochescu.
Cluster 6 “External Relations” is part of the structure of the European Union accession negotiations and covers areas such as the common foreign and security policy, trade policy, and the Union’s external relations. The opening of negotiations for this group of chapters represents a new stage in the Republic of Moldova’s EU accession process.
The Republic of Moldova opened its first cluster of accession negotiations with the European Union – Cluster 1 “Fundamental Values” – on 15 June 2026, during the second EU–Republic of Moldova Intergovernmental Conference held in Luxembourg.
