Moldovan president participates in 35th anniversary of legal establishment of first Parliament of Moldova
President Maia Sandu today participated, alongside the first democratically elected MPs, in a conference that marked 35 years since the legal establishment of Moldova's first Parliament.
The head of state appreciated the courage of the lawmakers from the early '90s, who called things by their trues names, reinstated the tricolor and voted for the Declaration of Independence on August 27, 1991.
“Through its courage, the first Parliament gave us back our freedom and laid the foundations of democratic institutions. Today, when democracy is increasingly challenged worldwide, we understand that it is not something ordained. It is a fragile construct that must be protected, strengthened and constantly nurtured,” remarked President Sandu.
At the same time, the head of state thanked the members of the first Parliament for laying the foundations of the Independence, noting that it was now the duty of the present generation to build a European Moldova - free, fair and dignified.
