Estonia's experience as to implementation of Internet voting discussed in Moldovan capital

Chisinau, 12 December /MOLDPRES/ - Estonia’s experience as to the implementation of the Internet voting today was discussed at a meeting of the inter-institutional group on the elaboration and piloting of the Internet Voting Information System.  

According to the Central Electoral Commission (CEC), the experience of Estonia concerning the implementation of the Internet voting was presented by an expert who had carried out the system in this country, Tarvi Martens, and a programme manager on cyber security, programme leader in Moldova Epp Maaten.

During discussions, the Estonian experts explained how the Internet voting system worked in Estonia. According to the Estonian system, electors can vote during seven days before the elections by using an identification number. Also, the system allows the voting also through a mobile phone, using a mobile ID. They said that the voting was encrypted, secret and secured. At the same time, each registration number is verified through the national systems of registration of the residence, as well as in the State Register of Voters.      

The working group was created at an initiative by CEC and is made up of representatives of the Commission, Electronic Governance Agency, Information Technology and Cyber Security Service, Public Services Agency, Intelligence and Security Service, National Centre for Personal Data Protection, as well as of the Civic Coalition for Free and Fair Elections.
