Moldovan PM, in interview with Bloomberg, says European path creates huge economic opportunities for Moldova, as well as for investors who come to country

The European path creates huge economic opportunities for Moldova, as well as for companies that choose to invest in the country. Prime Minister Vasile Tofan today made statements to this effect in an interview with Bloomberg, given during his visit to New York.

“I believe Moldova is one of the most attractive stories of economic convergence with the EU,” Vasile Tofan said.

In the context, the prime minister invited foreign companies to examine the investment opportunities offered by the country.

The official emphasized that the European Union had offered Moldova a 1.9 billion-euros-worth Growth Plan, which will accelerate economic development and create many opportunities for businesspeople seeking to invest in Moldova.

The PM cited Romania as an example, noting that it had experienced accelerated development following its integration into the EU.

“Romania is a great friend to us. We share more than history, a language, and a common identity. We also look to Romania as the model we want to follow. Romania is our main supporter and our main ambassador on this journey,” Vasile Tofan said.

The prime minister also referred to the security situation in the region. He emphasized that Moldova is “an important piece on the chessboard” in this context and that “Moldova is essential for any potential project to rebuild Ukraine, as well as for Ukraine’s security.”

“I like the chessboard metaphor and I believe we are an important piece on this board, where the size of the country is not representative of its geostrategic importance. We have the longest border with Ukraine of all the countries located southwest of Ukraine—more than 1,200 kilometers of border—which means that, for any potential project to rebuild Ukraine, as well as for Ukraine’s security, Moldova is essential,” the prime minister stressed.

He added that Moldova was counting on a just peace in Ukraine.

“We are counting on a just peace for Ukraine. I understand the temptation to resolve everything at any cost, but we must understand that establishing precedents in which the aggressor is tolerated will disrupt things in the future. Therefore, it is very important to achieve not only peace, but a just peace,” Vasile Tofan emphasized.

Prime Minister Vasile Tofan is visiting New York on September 23-26, to participate in the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly. The official will have more bilateral meetings and deliver a speech before the UN General Assembly.
