Romania’s Ambassador visits Giurgiulesti International Free Port: Important component of Moldova’s European integration
Giurgiulesti International Free Port is a strategic asset for the Republic of Moldova and the entire region, contributing to the maintenance of safe trade routes, the country’s economic resilience, and the diversification of transport connections. Romania’s Ambassador to the Republic of Moldova Cristian-Leon Țurcanu made the statement during a visit to Giurgiulesti Port on 10 September.
“In a regional context marked by major challenges, Giurgiulesti Port is more than a transit point. The port contributes to maintaining safe trade routes, strengthening the economic resilience of the Republic of Moldova, and diversifying its transport connections,” Cristian-Leon Țurcanu said.
The diplomat stressed that the port infrastructure’s proximity to Romania and European transport networks offers the Republic of Moldova new logistical opportunities and improved access to the European market.
“The increasingly close connection of this infrastructure with Romania and European transport networks means better access to the European market, logistical alternatives, and an economy more firmly anchored in the European Union. From this perspective, Giurgiulesti Port is also an important component of the Republic of Moldova’s European integration,” the ambassador noted.
According to Cristian-Leon Țurcanu, the development of Giurgiulesti Port can generate tangible benefits for the economy and citizens, contributing to a better-connected, more resilient, and more competitive Republic of Moldova.
Giurgiulesti International Free Port is the Republic of Moldova’s main access point to international maritime and river transport. Its location on the Lower Danube allows both river and seagoing vessels to operate, while the port infrastructure provides connections to road and rail transport.
In March 2026, the Government decided to strengthen the status of Giurgiulesti International Free Port as strategic infrastructure, with the aim of expanding its logistical capacities, attracting investment, and integrating it more closely into European transport corridors.
