Chinese company to restore national roads in Moldova

Chisinau, 30 September /MOLDPRES/- A Chinese company has expressed willingness to take on the national road rehabilitation projects in Moldova. Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Economy and Infrastructure Octavian Calmic signed with China Metallurgical Group Corporation Vice-President Gu Yuxiang a memorandum of intent on road rehabilitation, on 29 September.

The document sees the implementation of projects to rehabilitate roads in four stages. For the first stage, it is proposed to restore roads with a length of 181.9 kilometers at a total cost of 159 million euros. For the next stages, road sections for restoration and costs will be completed at other work sessions.

“The projects aimed at developing the national road infrastructure should have motto – quality-price-time, and the road rehabilitation works must start no later than April-May 2018”, Calmic said. He added that feasibility studies and project documentation are to be carried out before starting the projects.

According to the communication and public relations service of the Ministry of Economy and Infrastructure, Calmic said that the government, through elaboration of the transport and logistics strategy 2013-2022, which includes a priority national road rehabilitation programme, aims to develop infrastructure and provide good traffic and safety conditions. In this context, a partnership between Moldova and China was initiated, and following the rigorous selection, China Metallurgical Group Corporation could implement road rehabilitation projects.

Development partners, World Bank, EBRD, EIB and European Commission provide financial support for the implementation of the transport and logistics strategy. At the same time, a group of experts from both sides will be set up to discuss the financial issues and ways of implementation of the project, Deputy Economics Minister Vitalie Iurcu said.

“It is an honor to work in partnership with the Moldovan authorities and we will cooperate in our motto – trust and security”, Gu Yuxiang said.

The Chinese company works in more than 70 countries and has a team of experts and professionals of over 50,000 employees. The annual revenue of the company is 30 billion dollars.
