Moldovan consumers to receive more information about food products

Chisinau, 12 January /MOLDPRES/ - The law on informing consumers about food products was published in the today issue of Moldova’s Official Journal (Monitorul Oficial). The law provides for ensuring a higher level of consumers’ protection.  

The draft will provide people with the needed legal framework to safely select food products, taking into account sanitary, economic, ecological, social and other considerations. Thus, the legislative act is set to defend the legitimate interests of consumers and promote the fabrication and placement of qualitative foodstuffs on market.  

The document is to serve the interests of both the domestic market and the external one, by simplifying the legislation, imposing the compulsory labeling of food products in a clearer and more legible way, well-understood by consumers.  

Under the law, producers or traders are obliged to mention the names of products, ingredients used, their quantity, date of production and the deadline for consumption, conditions for preservation, name or the commercial name and address of the operator from the food business, as well as other information.

The new law is in line with the legislation on the sector of food products’ safety  and consumers’ protection and is adjusted to the European standards.

The present document enters into force 12 months upon the date of its publication in the Official Journal. At the same time, the government, in a 12-month period after the publication date, will bring the normative acts in line with the present law and will undertake needed measures for its enforcement.
