Chisinau, 6 February /MOLDPRES/ - Romania will further back the European integration of Moldova and Chisinau remains a foremost priority in the domestic and foreign policy of Romania, no matter the political colour of the governments at rule. Romanian Foreign Affairs Minister Teodor Melescanu today made statements to this effect at a joint news conference held with Foreign Affairs and European Integration Minister of Moldova Tudor Ulianovschi, on a working visit to Bucharest.

The two officials informed that the subject of the discussions in Bucharest had regarded the bilateral relations, as well as the two states’ regional and international agenda.

The Moldovan diplomacy head stressed that Moldova’s European integration remained a priority goal of the domestic and foreign policy for the Chisinau authorities, as it expresses the aspirations of the society. Ulianovschi thanked the Romanian leadership for the support provided in more sectors, including for the financial assistance offered. He noted that a new meeting of the governments of Romania and Moldova was likely to take place in Chisinau soon.

Romanian Foreign Affairs Minister Teodor Melescanu specified that the government of Romania would support in continuation Moldova’s European integration, implementation of reforms, actions to modernize and optimize the work of public institutions, sovereignty and territorial integrity. Melescanu also said that the declaration on union, adopted by some settlements of Moldova, remained without legal implications and showed the local will of citizens. The Romanian foreign affairs minister stressed that statements by President Igor Dodon that these actions might trigger “a civil war” were “fully erroneous and disproportionate.”

President Igor Dodon has earlier said at a TV programme that an eventual union with Romania would mean a civil war.
