International expert in Moldova expands on importance of situation in Eastern Europe for preserving security on continent

Chisinau, 02 March /MOLDPRES/ – The experts consider needed to boost defence capability and strengthen security dimension in the region. The EU and US experts and officials discussed it at the Interparliamentary Conference: Georgia, Moldova and Ukraine: Eastern Partnership and Current Security Challenges held in Chisinau today, the government’s communication and protocol department has reported.  

Jonathan Eyal, deputy director of the Royal Institute of Defence Research and Security (RUSI), said that nobody has had anything against Russia, but only against division of sphere of influence in the region. "It is important for preserving security throughout Europe what is happening in Eastern Europe. The today event is a beginning of a process of strengthening European security," said the expert.

Ambassador Alexander Vershbow referred upon risks of Russian arsenal within region. He chose to continue defence reforms in the Black Sea area and strengthen defence capabilities of the three countries.

Former defence minister of Georgia, Tinatin Khidasheli, thinks that progress in overcoming security challenges in Georgia, Moldova and Ukraine can not take place without a strong political will on behalf of authorities.

On the other hand, MP of Ukrain, Iryna Friz, said that only if Russia would withdraw its troops out of three countries, conflicts in the region could be regulated. According to her, "we need to be united and act together for regional security."

Former negotiator for settling the Transnistrian conflict, Eugen Carpov, said that "destabilisation in the region, military interventions, aggressive propaganda, financial embargos are the new Russian doctrine in relationship with Moldova." According to him, the Dniester region would receive constant financial and political support from outside.

Almost 150 high – level officials and experts of the first high – level Interparliamentary Conference: Georgia, Moldova and Ukraine: Eastern Partnership and Current Security Challenges participated in debates on info security, energy, defence and discussions to ensure stable economic growth and rule of law in the region.

The event is organised with Atlantic Council at initiative of Speakers of Parliaments of Moldova, Georgia and Ukraine. The representatives of 11 Parliaments confirmed their participation in the first High Level Interparliamentary Conference on security issues.
