Moldova to switch to summer time

16:19 | 24.03.2018 Category: Social

Chisinau, 24 March /MOLDPRES/- Moldova will switch to the summer time on 25 March. The clocks will be set by one hour forward; therefore, the time 2 am will become 3 am.

According to a press release of the government, the switch to the summer time takes place in line with the proposal by the UN Economic Commission for Europe and concomitantly with the European Union member states.

In February 2018, European Parliament decided to eliminate summer time in all EU countries. The resolution was voted by the majority of MEPs, following member states to adopt it, after their consent.

This 1-hour shift is practiced in Moldova, as well as in neighboring countries, Romania and Ukraine, as saving electricity. Over the years, proposals have been made to abandon this practice.

At present, 110 countries around the world are using this mechanism. In Europe, Iceland is the only country that does not use summer time. Russia has begun to apply the system since 1981, but gave up after 20 years, because it does not want to stress the citizens.

Moldova took this practice in 1979, to make optimal use of natural light and reduce artificial lighting.
