Ukrainian president promulgates law on joint control at Moldovan-Ukrainian border

Chisinau, 12 April /MOLDPRES/- Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko today promulgated the law on ratification of the agreement on joint control of people, means of transport and goods at the common border crossing points of the Moldovan-Ukrainian border, in the presence of Prime Minister Pavel Filip. The premier is on a visit to Kiev to attend the Security Forum, the government’s communication and protocol department has reported.

The premier expressed gratitude for the important step, which will allow Moldova to fully control the Moldovan-Ukrainian border, including the Transnistrian segment. The joint border control started on 17 July 2017 at the Cuciurgan-Pervomaisk crossing point on the territory of Ukraine.

The above-mentioned law was ratified by the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine on 1 March. The entry into force of the agreement will allow joint control to be extended to all Moldovan-Ukrainian border crossing points. Filip and Poroshenko said that this will ensure a more effective fight against crime and smuggling at the border and will increase regional security.

The officials pointed out the excellent relations between countries and agreed to continue to maintain an active political dialogue to implement all signed bilateral documents.

As priorities for the next period, the sides highlighted the opening of the bridge between Unguri and Boronita localities and the acceleration of demarcation of the Moldovan-Ukrainian border.

They discussed the work of the Moldovan-Ukrainian intergovernmental commission on economic cooperation, as well as the cooperation between the competent authorities of the two countries. In this context, they pointed out the organization of several meetings and negotiations on topics of common interest on the bilateral agenda, especially, the protection of the Dniestre river basin ecosystem and the draft agreement on Dniestre hydropower complex operation.   

In this context, Filip appreciated the advanced level of talks between states. This year there will be a lot of events that will strengthen the bilateral dialogue. In May, the Moldovan Foreign Minister will pay a visit to Ukraine, and in June the meeting of the premiers of member states of the Organisation for Democracy and Economic Development –GUAM will be held in Chisinau.

For his part, Poroshenko expressed confidence that these and other events will contribute to the advancement of Moldova-Ukrainian relations, including the economic dimension, and reconfirmed the commitment to carry out all planned joint actions.
