US Treasury backs fiscal reforms, welcomes changes over past years

Chisinau, 18 April /MOLDPRES/- US Treasury appreciates the pace and quality of implementation of reforms, as well as good collaboration and workload on tax-related projects. The position was expressed at a meeting between Parliament Speaker Andrian Candu and US Treasury officials in Washington DC, the parliament’s communication and public relations department has reported.

The US officials have opted for further fiscal reforms. At the same time,  they assured the Moldovan delegation of support for strengthening the financial-banking system and the willingness to provide expertise and support.

The speaker accompanied by governor of the National Bank of Moldova Sergiu Cioclea and Finance Minister Octavian Armasu met Andy Baukol, Deputy Assistant Secretary for International Monetary Policy, Evangelia Bouzis, Deputy Assistant Secretary for Europe and Eurasia, Larry McDonald, Deputy Assistant Secretary of State, Paul Leonovich, Associate Director, and Patricia Pollard, IMF Office in the USA.

Representatives of Moldova have announced as priority investments in education, infrastructure and justice reform. This is a prerequisite for sustainable long-term growth. The Moldovan delegation made  a presentation of the legislative measures taken to combat money laundering and the independence of the Assets Recovery Agency.

The US Treasury representatives welcomed the actions taken in the context of the fight against money laundering and compliance with the rules adopted in this regard.

At the same time, they made a review on the actions related to commitments to the IMF. They pointed out the economic growth, good fiscal administration that generated higher revenues to the budget, the structural fiscal reform meant to help strengthen public finance management in the medium term, the electronic public procurement system and the first results of the public administration reform, which have led to an increase in the efficiency of the authorities. Also, they presented the measures taken to improve the business climate and build a transparent tax system and clear rules.

On the same day, the speaker attended the Global Parliamentary Conference of the World Bank’s and International Monetary Fund’s Parliamentary Network.
